On Birthdays and Barbecues…

Grilling steaksIt’s Pedro’s birthday today!

To celebrate, he has chosen to have steak on the grill.

This meal never would have happened while we lived in the city. Raising your own beef and having it butchered allows an occasional steak to grace our table.

There’s not many steaks on one cow, so we save them for special occasions, like birthdays! I will admit that it’s one of my favorite fringe benefits to country living!

I like to use a special marinade on all my grilled meats. It’s a recipe my mom got years ago from one of our neighbors, Bert. He was quite a character! I can remember a lot of teasing and laughter whenever Bert and Betty were around!

It was originally a barbecue sauce for chicken, but I have used it on venison, steak, chicken, and pork. You can use it to marinade or brush it on the meat as it’s cooking, or both!

Grilling Marinade

Put in blender and blend together:

1 1/2 cup cooking oil
3/4 soy sauce
1/4 Worcestershire sauce
2 Tbs. dried mustard
2 cloves garlic
2 1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. pepper
1 1/2 tsp. parsley
1/4 wine vinegar
1/3 cup lemon juice

Store this in the refrigerator and it will keep for several weeks.

Poison Ivy Woes

Poison Ivy.poison ivy

It’s never been an issue for me before and I never really paid that much attention to it, until now.  Berry picking in the ravines last week yielded some lovely berries, but also one small circle of poison ivy rash on my right arm.

I wasn’t too worried, at first. It was smaller than a dime. My sister said to immediately apply a cream with hydrocortisone and if possible, take some Benedryl internally.

My only hydrocortisone cream was 10 years old, but I faithfully applied it that night in abundance and the next day as we packed up and traveled to the State park. But as we unpacked the car, it somehow got lost.

Another sister had brought some along so I applied that for the next two days while watching more small patches appear randomly on my arms.

Hmm…maybe there is something to this Benedryl internally thing.

We came home on Sunday with no sign of the hydrocortisone cream. I didn’t worry about it until Monday when more appeared on my leg.

By then I was really itching, but couldn’t seem to find the cream and couldn’t get to town because of the fair projects.

Tuesday, more spots on my other arm.

Wednesday, some of the spots are oozing. Yuck!

Thursday, it’s time for some Benedryl internally and some fresh cream!

The Benedryl slowed the spreading, but wiped me out and left me foggy. I finally stopped taking it over the weekend and today I noticed a few new very small spots.

Now what do I do? (Other than try not to itch!)

Help!

A Blue Ribbon Day at the Fair!

State Fair violet jelly it was a great day at the County Fair yesterday! The kids all did well and all the projects made it on time. (Round of applause!)

Here’s a run down on the results:

Matt: one blue and 2 selected for the State Fair

Dagmar: one blue, 1 considered for the State Fair and 1 selected for the State Fair

Pedro: 2 blue and 1 Outstanding Junior Exhibit

Angel Girl: 2 blue and 1 outstanding junior Exhibit

Pedro’s footstool receiving a blue ribbon (yeah!)

Now to take a deep breath, rest a few minutes before heading straight into Vacation Bible School.

I’ve decided that the term “Summer Vacation” is definitely a misnomer!

Happy Birthday, America!

American flag

A Father and His Flag
By D. A. Hoover

“I pledge allegiance to the flag,”
I heard my father say,
And saw how proudly he beheld
Our colors on that day.

It was the “Fourth” – firecrackers popped,
Bands played, and clowns made noise-
A fun exciting kind of day
For little girls and boys.

Then everybody was so still;
Old Glory marched on by.
I know I saw a tear of pride
Shine in my father’s eye.

And then he smiled and said to me,
“My boy, of all you do,
Don’t once forget this glorious sight,
Our own red, white, and blue!”

May your own eyes tear up today as we remember and celebrate our freedom, and those who gave their lives so we could be free.

God bless America!

Hello Summer Hot Dog Roast

roasting marshmallow on camp fireHello summer!

After the spring we’ve had here in the Midwest, I think all of us are ready to leave it behind and begin a new season.

We celebrated the official start of summer tonight with a hot dog roast. We had planned to go out to the ponds, but the weather looked a little uncertain, and the ticks are awful, so we stayed close to the house instead.

We sat and enjoyed nicely charred hot dogs, lukewarm baked beans and carrot sticks while swatting gnats and flies all the while getting smoke in our eyes and grass in our lemonade.  Don’t you just love a hot dog roast!?

Actually, I do! There’s something about the informality around the campfire that relaxes everybody. The kids got to telling stories and joking around. Everybody ate more than they should have, and it was fun. We made a memory tonight.

The kids are sitting outside now, joking around and watching the storms move in across the rural skies. It’s an amazing sight.

I guess I’m a pretty contented country gal tonight…smoke-filled hair, a belly full of s’mores, fun family time and a glimpse of the awesome power of God. I’d call that a good evening!
